Phillies acquires leftist appeaser Jose Alvarado in exchange for 3 teams

Dave Dombrowski made his first deal as president of baseball operations for Phillies.

Dombrowski, who promised to be aggressive in filling holes in what was the worst bullpen of the championships in 2020, acquired left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarado from Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team deal.

The Phillies are sending left-handed appeaser Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Alvarado, 25, weighs 6-2 and 245 pounds. He has an electric fastball that hits the 90s, but control has been a problem throughout his career. In 2018, Alvarado shot in 70 games for Tampa Bay and had an ERA of 2.39 when hitting 11 hitters for nine innings. He has struggled with injuries in the past two seasons, including a fight against a shoulder inflammation that limited him to nine games in the regular season in 2020. He made two postseason appearances for Tampa Bay.

Alvarado has some experience in closing games and could take a look at that role. He is eligible for salary arbitration.
