Philadelphia shooting: 17-year-old boy shot and killed at Kingsessing recreation center

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shootout at a recreation center in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia, police said.

The shooting took place just before 8 pm on Friday at the Francis Myers Recreation Center on 58th Street and Kingsessing Avenue.

Investigators could be seen examining the basketball court for evidence.

Police said the 17-year-old was shot in the chest.

The teenager, whose identity remains unknown, was transported by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

No weapons were recovered from the scene, officials said.

No arrests were made.

Not far from that scene, on 55th Street with Christian, patrols were stepped up around another recreation center, the Christy Recreation Center, after 16-year-old Kahree Simmons was shot and killed on Thursday at basketball.

Police said that in this case, four men got out of a small SUV and started shooting, hitting Simmons and two other teenagers who were playing.

Action News spoke to his family on Friday.

“Kahree was loved. He didn’t deserve it, he didn’t do anything. He just left the house and went to play basketball with his friends. That was it,” said Kahree’s brother Stephen Simmons.

They are begging for help for a prison.

“I implore everyone who hears me now to think about it if it were your son. We were just like you, look at the news and we never thought it would be our situation, but today is our situation,” said Stephen Simmons.

Also on Thursday, the security video captured the sounds and part of a quadruple shooting at block 1400 on N. 76th Street in Overbrook Park.

Another 16-year-old was killed, as was a 24-year-old man.

During a press conference at rec between 55th Street and Christian Street, Mayor Jim Kenney said the city will begin weekly updates on the armed violence epidemic.

“The briefings will be open to members of the media and broadcast publicly on the Philadelphia city Facebook page,” said Kenney.

While the police were investigating Kingsessing’s murder, an apartment fire broke out across the street.

The fire started just before 9 pm, when smoke was seen from a two-story duplex.

Crews controlled the fire in 15 minutes.

There were no injuries in the fire.
