Peugeot’s return to America was fun while it lasted

Remember when Peugeot said that was returning to the USA? Well, let’s just say that this may no longer be a priority.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Groupe PSA, said in 2018 that the company would make its next generation of cars in compliance with the U.S. There was only an advantage in the United States, Tavares said at the time, now almost three years ago.

Here’s what the Peugeot CEO is saying now. In Automotive News:

“We talked last time about [Peugeot’s U.S. re-entry] a year and a half ago, before Stellantis, ” [Peugeot CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato] said. “We cannot fail to take into account that in the coming days Peugeot will be part of this new world. I imagine that in the coming months, due to the new strategy, we will have to adapt and reconsider all elements, including this one. “

Imparato said it is important that the company does not overlap brands. He said, however, that Peugeot’s possible reintroduction into the United States was still “on the table” for the future.

These are the kinds of vague promises that make you think it will never happen, and you can’t really blame them. Peugeot left the US in 1991, saying that getting their cars certified was too expensive and, you know, they weren’t selling so many of them to really justify exercising anyway, or 4,292 cars in 1990.

Now the time is, at the very least, much worse. Peugeot is largely an automobile company, as with real cars, not large trucks and SUVs. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if Peugeot came here in today’s environment and fell flat on its face, since gasoline is cheap and people still want big trucks and SUVs.

I will leave those decisions to the people who are paid to make them, and instead I note that Peugeot’s coming here would definitely be interesting, about the only real thing I’m inclined to.

In addition, the Peugeot Sport Engineered 508 looks incredible.
