Petula Clark shocked that ‘Downtown’ rang before the bombing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Singer Petula Clark expressed shock and disbelief that her 1964 hit, “Downtown”, aired just minutes before a bomb detonated in Nashville on Christmas morning.

“I was told that the background music of that strange ad – it was me – singing ‘Downtown’! Of all the thousands of songs – why is that? Clark wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

Clark said he loves Nashville and wishes he could give everyone in town a hug.

The explosion occurred in the heart of historic downtown Nashville. The explosion killed the bomber, injured several people and damaged dozens of buildings. The RV issued a warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes, then switched to a recording of “Downtown” before the explosion.

“(Millions) of people around the world were thrilled with this happy song,” wrote Clark. “Maybe you can read something else in those words – depending on your mood. It’s possible.”
