AUBURN, California. – An investigation was underway after the death of a person who died shortly after receiving a coronavirus vaccine in Placer County last week.
County health officials and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued a joint statement saying the person died on Thursday, hours after being vaccinated.
The vaccine was not administered by Placer County Public Health, officials said, without providing details on where the person received the vaccine.
The authorities noted that the individual test was positive for COVID-19 in late December.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends being vaccinated even if a person has taken COVID-19 because of the serious health risks associated with the virus and because reinfection is possible, although rare. The CDC says that patients with COVID-19 who have been treated with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, should wait 90 days before being vaccinated.
It is not known what, if any treatment the person received for the virus and Placer County officials emphasized, “any reports on the cause of death are premature, pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Authorities said local, state and federal agencies were investigating the case.
