The alternative wellness site Goop by Gwyneth Paltrow promises that the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle will provide “sophisticated warmth”, but one customer received much more than she expected.

Jody Thompson, a 50-year-old London-based media consultant, told The Sun on Monday that the candle burned at her home after winning the product as a prize in an online test.

“The candle exploded and emitted huge flames, with pieces flying everywhere,” she recalled. “I never saw anything like it. The whole thing was on fire and it was too hot to touch. There was hell in the room.”

Thompson and his partner, David Snow, worked together to deal with the situation and decided to throw the candle out of their home.

“We finally got it under control and played through the front door,” she told the outlet.

Even though Thompson said the candle “could have burned the place down” and “it was scary at the time”, she admitted that she found the situation “funny” in retrospect.

Thompson did not provide details on how his candle “exploded”. However, there is a warning to “light the candle in sight” and “stay away from things that catch fire” on the Goop website. The statement also offers advice on how to cut the “wick to 1/8 ‘before each lighting”, place “on a stable, heat-resistant surface” and not burn for “more than two hours at a time”.

Paltrow’s Goop has already been ridiculed for distributing health and beauty tips without providing adequate scientific evidence, and some experts have publicly ridiculed the top company’s suggestions.

After hearing about Thompson’s disastrous experience with the $ 75 candle made with geranium, citrus bergamot and cedar, Goop’s critics took the opportunity to joke about Paltrow’s company once again.

Despite constant criticism from Paltrow and Goop, the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle sold out hours after its launch in January 2020. According to the Goop website, the product started out as a “joke” between Paltrow and a professional perfumer Douglas Little.

“The idea was to do something that was voluptuous and sensual and also provocative and fun,” he told The Cut, later clarifying that it doesn’t actually smell like Paltrow’s vagina.

“This idea that the smell is the fragrance of Gwyneth’s vagina. Not the case. It’s called ‘This smells like My Vagina ‘means the person who is holding it. It’s speculative and fun, “he said.

Months later, Paltrow launched his next eyebrow raising product: a “This Smells Like My Orgasm” candle, which also costs $ 75, according to the Goop website.
