Pence and Trump’s relationship is “friendly”, says the source

The source did not provide further details to CNN about the relationship, nor did it describe the content of the calls. A call was initiated by each one.

CNN previously reported that Trump will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the matter, while Pence declined an invitation to speak at the conference, according to two sources. The well-informed source said on Monday that Pence’s reason for not going to CPAC is because “it is traditional for the president and vice president to be quiet, and the incoming president deserves this courtesy.”
The difference in approach of the two former leaders occurs when the Republican Party is struggling with its future in the post-Trump era and follows the tensions between Trump and Pence over the January 6 riot on the US Capitol and the role of the former vice president in certifying the results of the election of President Joe Biden.

The source also noted that the former vice president is close to Arizona governor Doug Ducey, now head of the Association of Republican Governors. In the summer, the source said, Pence will be more active in politics, probably in the government cycle, and told House minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who will also be active.

As for the ex-president’s appearance at CPAC and beyond, the source said: “People don’t want to risk (Trump’s) wrath, but no one really knows how it will play out.”

The problem, the source said, is that the former president will not have a strong political team around him. “Many people are coming and going,” including those who will meet him in Florida before the conference, such as Jason Miller, Bill Stepien, Justin Clark and Brad Parscale.

“They will want to continue spreading the narrative that he is the creator of kings,” added the source.
