Pence and Pelosi share ‘elbow’ after Biden certification vote

Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi concluded a difficult and sometimes frightening joint session of Congress with an elbow in the early hours of Thursday.

The friendly gesture, apparently instigated by Pelosi, came after the House and Senate certified the victory of President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College, ending a long and difficult day. Pence presides over the Senate.

The two also had a brief conversation after certification and seemed to thank each other.

Certification, which is a formality in most election years, was bound to be delayed by objections from some Republican lawmakers to the results in a handful of conflicting states.

However, after Congress started the process on Wednesday, a group of Trump supporters violated the Capitol building, forcing some to take shelter and others to be evacuated.

When the Capitol police finally removed the troublemakers, Congress returned to the session to continue the certification process. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and other lawmakers swore they would not be “intimidated” by protesters.

After objections to the results in Arizona and Pennsylvania were debated and defeated, Congress certified Biden’s victory at about 3:40 am ET on Thursday.

Pelosi and Pence did not always agree and the small gesture was a jump from some tense discussions between the Democrat and some Republicans, including the State of the Union speech last year, when she tore up her copy of President Trump’s statements after her speech.
