House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave an extensive interview to “60 Minutes”, which aired on Sunday night, and one of the highlights was when correspondent Lesley Stahl asked her about the future leadership of the party.
Stahl pointed out that Pelosi is 80 and the majority leader in the House, Steny Hoyer, 81, and she asked why there are no clear heirs in the party. Especially since “The Squad”, the group of young progressive people, commands a large number of followers on social networks.
Pelosi told Stahl that the issue was essentially based on a false premise. She replied that the party leaders had prepared future leadership and perhaps she did not know.
“Why AOC [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.] Do you complain that you haven’t been training younger people for leadership? asked Stahl.
Pelosi replied, “I don’t know. You are going to have to ask her – because we are going.”
Stahl seemed surprised for a moment and said, “That was kind of rough, kind of dismissing her.”

Pelosi said it was not his intention and said that AOC is “very effective, as are others – many other members in our caucuses that the press does not pay attention to. But they are there and are building support for what comes next” .
Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept in an interview published in December that Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer should no longer hold leadership positions in the party they occupy. She said the party has little interest in preparing future generations.
“I think one of the things that I have been fighting – I think a lot of people are fighting – is [that] the internal dynamics of the Chamber has meant that there are very few options for succession, if you want, “she said.

Pelosi once also caught the attention of the media when he seemed to downplay Ocasio-Cortez’s victory over Representative Joe Crowley in the 2016 Democratic primaries. She said a “glass of water with a D” could win in those Democratic strongholds.
