“The situation of this unbalanced president could not be more dangerous and we must do everything we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced attack on our country and our democracy,” he added.
Milley’s office did not immediately comment.
Congressional Democrats, and some Republicans, are seeking to remove Trump from office – either through the action of Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet or through the congressional impeachment process – after the Commander in Chief urged his supporters to violate the US Capitol.
The riot led to the evacuation of lawmakers, delayed the official certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over Trump and resulted in five deaths, including a Capitol police officer.
Trump’s removal by the 25th Amendment is a long shot, with two cabinet secretaries presenting their resignations after the Capitol violence. Instead, Democrats are preparing to take action to accuse Trump next week.
In her letter, Pelosi said that she and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer contacted Pence without reply, adding that “they still hope to hear from him as soon as possible with a positive response about whether he and the Cabinet will honor their oath to the Constitution. “
“If the president does not leave his post imminently and voluntarily, Congress will continue our action,” he added.
Numerous progressive lawmakers have been pushing for legislation that limits the president’s authority to launch a nuclear attack – including requiring additional officers to sign the launch and making “no first use of nuclear weapons” an official US policy.
Some Democrats also warned about the politicization of Trump’s armed forces and expressed concerns before the November election that the commander-in-chief could use the armed forces, either nationally or internationally, inappropriately in order to influence the election or remain in the power.
