Pelosi announces plans for a ‘9/11 type commission’ to investigate the attack on the Capitol

“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an independent 9/11 external Commission to ‘investigate and report the facts and causes related to the domestic terrorist attack of January 6, 2021 against the Complexo do United States Capitol ‘, ”wrote Pelosi.

Pelosi had already asked for the formation of a commission and said he believed there was a need.

Such a commission would be established by a statute, approved by both chambers and sanctioned by the President. The commission members would not be elected leaders and would be outside the government.

In a separate letter to House Democrats earlier this month, Pelosi wrote that it is “clear that we will need to establish a 9/11 type commission to examine and report on the facts, causes and security related to the January 6 terrorist attack.”

The deadly attack prompted House Democrats to move quickly to accuse former President Donald Trump in January. The ex-president’s impeachment trial in the Senate ended at the weekend and ended with Trump’s acquittal on a single charge of inciting insurrection.

Efforts to strengthen security at the Capitol and shed light on what led to the rape by a violent pro-Trump crowd on January 6 are still underway, however.

In mid-January, Pelosi announced that retired Lieutenant General Russel Honoré will conduct a review of the Capitol’s “security infrastructure” following the attack.

“In recent weeks, General Honoré has been assessing our security needs, looking at what happened on January 6 and how we should ensure that this does not happen again,” wrote Pelosi in his letter on Monday.

Republicans acquitted Trump again, but this time is different

“He has worked with Jurisdiction Committees and will continue to make proposals. It is clear from their conclusions and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened, ”she said.

Earlier this month, Pelosi told reporters after leaving a news conference that a 9/11 type commission to investigate the insurrection would be “different” from the one formed after the 9/11 terrorist attack – and would have a greater emphasis on diversity.

“Different from 9/11. What was there, nine people? All white, one woman. It will be different, ”she said at the time.

Although Pelosi praised the 9/11 commission, she said it was now “a different world”.

Asked who she had in mind to serve on the committee, Pelosi confirmed that members would not be serving on it, saying, “It is an outside committee.”
