As February 2 approaches as the NBA deadline for teams to aggregate players acquired in a later trade, the New Orleans Pelicans focused on the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics as potential commercial destinations for JJ Redick, sources said. The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Redick, whose family lives in Brooklyn, is believed to have a strong preference for returning to the Northeast. No deal is imminent yet, the sources said.
In 76ers, Nets and Celtics, the Pelicans target a championship contender for a house of commerce. All three teams expressed interest, the sources said. Redick has a $ 13.1 million contract that expires at the end of the season.
Redick, 34, has averaged 7.9 points this season. It was a “coach’s decision not to play” in the last two Pelicanos games. New Orleans has two promising young guards, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kira Lewis, who are at the precipice of the rotation points in the crowded backcourt.
A 15-year-old NBA veteran, Redick had a highly productive career, averaging 13 points and shooting 41.4 percent in the 3-point range in 912 NBA games.
Athletic reported on Tuesday that the teams were calling Redick and Lonzo Ball and that the Pelicans were open to discussing both in potential packages.
The NBA has two future dates related to the March 25 trading deadline:
February 2: Last day on which a player can be traded and still aggregated in a multiplayer transaction at the March 25 trading deadline.
February 6: Most players who signed free agent contracts in the off-season can begin trading.
