EXCLUSIVE: With yesterday’s news that epic BAFTA winning period gangster Peaky Blinders will conclude with its sixth season, came the promise that the series would continue “in another way,” said creator Steven Knight. Elaborating this, he told Deadline: “Covid has changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a film. This is what will happen ”.
A film has long been considered for the series, and while there are no details at the moment and Deadline understands that nothing has been formalized, it seems like a logical extension to the series that has become its own industry – or as Knight told me in the past, Peaky it is “a beast that will not die”. There are books, clothing lines, an official soundtrack and a video game. Knight was also approached about a ballet spinoff version and a West End musical.

Knight had previously expressed interest in ending the TV series of the drama led by Cillian Murphy with a seventh season, but the pandemic affected the work. The sixth season began filming on Monday, delayed just under a year by the pandemic. The details are still under wraps, although Knight said earlier that he was planting seeds in Season 5 to be harvested later, one of which was “that fascism is afoot”.
Executive producer Caryn Mandabach told me: “This final season of our beloved Peaky Blinders it will be the best so far. Steve’s incredible ability to be prescient about world events can only be compared to his ability to make Tommy Shelby the most indelible character of our times. ”
Season 5 was the most watched so far by the Shelby family, as the series has been gaining momentum since 2013. The last season began with the 1929 financial crisis and with Murphy’s Tommy Shelby as MP. When he is approached by real-life fascist arsonist Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) and his bold vision for Britain, Tommy realizes that his response will affect not only the future of his family, but the entire nation.
The season has also plunged into Tommy and Knight’s psyche over the years said he would like to “rehabilitate” the character. His plan, he told us earlier, was to end the series in seven seasons with the start of World War II so that Peaky it becomes a story about people between wars.
