Patrick Reed is ‘fun’ amid controversy

“Hate or love them”, certain players make the game fun, according to Paige Spiranac.

On Sunday, the influential golfer weighed in on a weekend controversy involving Patrick Reed, who won the Farmers Insurance Open.

During the tournament in Torrey Pines, San Diego, the incident arose in the par 4 10th, when Reed hit a 190 yard shot from a bunker, with a TV replay showing the ball bouncing once before entering the field. Without waiting for a referee, Reed took the ball to see if it fit. Reed told the officer that no one in his group or a nearby volunteer saw him bounce. He received a free drop and saved the pair in a round of 70.

“I will say that Patrick Reed contributes to golf fun and I don’t hate it,” tweeted Spiranac.

“Give me Bryson (DeChambeau), Reed and Brooks (Koepka) talking all day. Hate or love them, it’s good for golf ”, she added in a separate tweet.

This is not Reed’s first encounter with controversy, as he was penalized during the World Hero Challenge in December 2019. His colleagues also had opinions on Saturday’s events, notably Xander Schauffele, who tied for second place.

“I mean, he did everything according to the book according to the official and everyone was there,” said Schauffele on Sunday, although he did not see the clip in question.

“Obviously, the conversation between the boys is not very good, I think, but he is protected by the Tour (PGA) and that is all that matters, I think,” he continued.
