Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play the AFC Championship against Buffalo Bills on Sunday after overcoming the last hurdles of his concussion protocol.
Mahomes was injured in the third quarter of the Chiefs’ victory over the Cleveland Browns in the divisional round. He was knocked to the ground by the Browns linebacker, Mack Wilson, and seemed to hit his head on the ground as he went down. He looked wobbly as he was helped to his feet.

On Friday, Mahomes detailed the move that put him in a bad position.
“We had a game option called that we had run at the beginning of the game. I ran to the right, obviously I was hit, I tried to get up, I felt my legs burst,” said Mahomes.
“I knew it was not a good thing, so I could be grabbed. I remember that before I left the field, I was telling the coaches to let me stay there, so that Chad (Henne) could warm up because I knew we were about to try on the fourth descent and I went to the test and everything. “

Mahomes said he and team officials did not believe that the latest effects of the injury had occurred.
“You want to be there, but you have to follow the protocol, and you have to do it the right way. I mean, you have to look at the long term as much as you look at the short term and go to all the doctors and talk to all doctors and undergoing tests, we have to believe that there will be no prolonged effects and that I will be able to go out there and be myself and who I am every week, “he said.
