Several patients at a Kroger site in Virginia who expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccine were reportedly mistakenly injected with an empty syringe, according to a local report.
A health worker at the site in Kroger, Chesterfield County, was “under the impression” that a colleague had filled the syringes before patients arrived for their appointments, reported the local news station WRIC. Less than 10 people were injected with an empty syringe.
The patients affected by the accident were later contacted to return for the real vaccine, according to the news station, which added that the Virginia Department of Health was later contacted and is “working with [the Kroger location] on that subject. ”
The vaccinators were retrained to administer the vaccine.

“We apologize for this omission and for the inconvenience caused to these customers,” a Kroger spokesman told WRIC in a statement.
“This is a herculean effort by the government and the private industry working together to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible. Errors are going to happen in this process, I think that should be expected ”, said a patient who received the vaccine at Kroger Location said. “But I think we should take this into practice and it certainly shouldn’t stop anyone from getting the vaccine or getting the vaccine.”

A similar incident occurred in Colorado in January, when an 82-year-old woman who hoped to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at a local vaccination clinic was also mistakenly injected with an empty syringe.
