Another veteran defensive player must reach the free agent market.

The Panthers plan to release Tre Boston from security, according to several reports. Boston had two years left from the three-year contract he signed with the club last March.

But Alaina Getzenberg’s Charlotte Observer reports that Boston will not be officially launched until closer to the new league year. This could give a team the opportunity to come in and switch to Boston, winning the remaining two seasons in their contract.

This was Boston’s second spell with the Panthers, as the club chose him in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. He spent a season with each of the Chargers and Cardinals before returning to Carolina in 2019.

Boston started all 16 games in each of the past two years, recording an interception, four defending passes, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a sack in 2020.
