Panthers step up defense on first official free agency day

Reddick, 26, is the big fish, but also a familiar face for the Panthers’ team.

He played for Panthers coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow at the Temple (with 9.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for defeat as a senior), and he finally looked like the player they met again last season.

Reddick was the Cardinals’ 13th overall choice in 2017, but he managed only 7.5 sacks in his first three years, never shining the way he did in college. It flourished last year, with 12.5 sacks and six forced fumbles in Arizona.

At 1.80 m and 235 pounds, Reddick is not the prototypical size for a pass-rusher, but the Panthers are not concerned with defense models.

Between Brian Burns being a hybrid of a linebacker and Jeremy Chinn able to play safely and a linebacker, the Panthers are comfortable with guys who are not easy to define.

Perryman, 28, gives the Panthers a solid presence to stop the race in the middle, filling the vacancy left when Tahir Whitehead became a free agent.

Perryman was chosen in the second round in 2015 and started 51 games for the Chargers. He is a classic internal linebacker and gives them some flexibility in the way they use Chinn and Jermaine Carter.

Fox, 26, adds a versatile pass-rusher ahead of the Panthers. He had 6.0 sacks for the Rams last season, and his ability to play inside or outside gives them another piece to move.

All they did in the attack was to add two starters to a flowing line.

While the Panthers were able to keep the right to face Taylor Moton with the franchise brand, the only other contractor was pivot Matt Paradis.

Five other strikers from last year’s team became unrestricted free agents on Wednesday – left winger Russel Okung, left winger Chris Reed, right winger John Miller and reserves Michael Schofield and Tyler Larsen.

Elflein and Erving give the Panthers experienced options that mark many of the boxes Rhule likes in the players.

Elflein, 26, can play in various internal positions and gives them an immediate initial guard and potential future coverage in the middle (Paradis has another year to live).

An ex-choice of Ohio State Vikings in the third round, Elflein has had 49 games in four seasons (ending last year with the Jets).

Erving, 28, is even more versatile, with the ability to play in all five positions. He spent the past year as a swing forward for the Cowboys, but he also played center and guard during his time with the Browns and Chiefs. The first choice in the first round has 47 career starts and you will probably have the first opportunity to take the left tackle.

It’s been a busy week. But when Fitterer came in before sunrise on Thursday, he knew there was more work to be done.
