Dwayne Haskins was not claimed, but he may have no problem getting a spot on the list in 2021.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the former choice of the first round in Washington is receiving interest from several teams, including the Carolina Panthers, according to an informed source on the situation.
Rapoport added that Haskins is unlikely to sign before the end of the season, but the Panthers and others remain intrigued by the 23-year-old QB.
Haskins ‘quick death in Washington after just 13 games represented a flaw in the organization that brought him into the building, a new connectionless coach who never appeared on the QB, Haskins’ bad game and recent problems off the pitch.
Other organizations are likely to see QB with strong arms as a talent that can become an NFL holder in the right circumstances.
The Panthers are an interesting team to be interested in Haskins. Matt Rhule’s attack is friendly to QB, and the motivator may be the type of coach who gets the best out of Haskins. Teddy Bridgewater’s contract keeps him in town for at least another year, but there is room for a younger flag to grow up with the veteran. PJ Walker and Will Grier are currently the backups for the Panthers, but it seems that Rhule would like to import another option with greater advantage in the long run.
After Sunday’s win pushed Carolina into the draft, if there were no highly-prized novice QBs who could fall for the Panthers, Rhule could see Haskins as a worthy project that he could pay off in the future.
The teams were not interested in taking on the final guaranteed years of Haskins’ rookie contract. Washington is responsible for that. But Haskins still has the talent to be an NFL QB to improve his readings and learn to maneuver better under pressure. For the right price, there may be several teams looking to add the young QB as a design option with a big advantage in 2021.
