Pair of magnitude 4.0 and 3.3 earthquakes rock the LA area

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported on Monday morning at 4:44 am near Inglewood, less than half an hour after a minor quake hit the same area.

The small earthquake was felt in southern California, according to the US Geological Survey. The 3.3 tremor that preceded it struck at 4:15 am. There were no reports of any damage.

The earthquake occurred near the intersection of Prairie and Century avenues. It occurred less than a mile from Lennox, less than a mile from Hawthorne, a mile from Los Angeles and a mile from Del Aire.

Earthquake expert, Dr. Lucy Jones, said on Twitter that two earthquakes were strong enough to be “felt by most people awake in Los Angeles”, but noted that they were “very deep”, about 20 kilometers. She added that she was probably not on any mapped fault.

The 4.0 earthquake was followed by several minor earthquakes in Inglewood and Lennox arwa.

In the last 10 days, there were three earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.

An average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.0 occur annually in the Greater Los Angeles area, according to a recent three-year data sample.
