Pagani Huayra R unveiled as 850-HP V12 track-only supercar

Pagani’s nearly 30-year history has produced just two models. But these are often transformed over time into ever hotter variants. Pagani did it with Zonda, and did it again with Huayra, introducing the menacing Huayra R, just for clues, today. The definitive Huayra may look no different than the non-R version, although it brings together a number of unique features and parts, including a custom-made, naturally aspirated V12 engine.

Pagani gets its engines from Mercedes, which supplies the Italian automaker with naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 engines. However, the Huayra R needed something special, so Pagani partnered with Mercedes-Benz racing subsidiary HWA AG to design and build a custom engine. The result is a powerful mill that produces 850 horsepower (625 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque. This power comes with a 9,000 rpm red line, which should result in a totally brutal exhaust note.

The company says the Huayra R will sound like an old Formula 1 car. Pagani uses an Inconel exhaust system developed specifically for the R. It has exhaust pipes of identical length for all 12 cylinders, which Pagani pairs with collectors and exhausts of exclusive design. The treadmill supercar comes equipped with mufflers that can be installed to reduce the exhaust note to stay within the FIA sound limit of 110 decibels for noise-restricted trails.

Pagani builds the car around a new monocoque carbon-titanium chassis, which uses the engine and transmission as integral parts to increase stiffness and stiffness. The power goes to the rear wheels through a sequential six-speed gearbox not synchronized with a dog-ring. A pair of active aerodynamic flaps at the rear help the car manage its aerodynamics. The car produces 2,204 pounds (1,000 kilograms) of downforce at 199 miles per hour (320 kilometers per hour). OR weighs only 2,315 pounds (1,050 kg) dry.

Pagani plans to produce just 30 copies of the Huayra R, each costing € 2.6 million ($ 3.1 at current exchange rates), plus taxes. The price tag gives you a wonderful piece of automotive engineering.
