Packers promoting Maurice Drayton to coordinate special teams

The Green Bay Packers have a new special team coordinator.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Packers are promoting assistant coach of special teams Maurice Drayton to coordinate, replacing Shawn Mennenga.

Drayton, who has 22 years of coaching experience, was originally hired as a special team assistant by Mike McCarthy in 2018. He spent a year under the command of special team coordinator Ron Zook and was maintained as an assistant by Matt LaFleur after an interview. for the position of coordinator in 2019. In the past two seasons, he has helped Mennenga, who is being discharged.

Drayton also spent two years as an assistant coach for special teams in Indianapolis. After five years working with coordinators, he will now have a chance in the lead role of the Packers in 2021.

Drayton has work to do. In the annual ranking of Rick Gosselin’s special teams, the Packers finished last in 2018, 29th in 2019 and 26th in 2020. He will need significant improvements to get the Packers out of the lower third of the NFL on special teams.

Drayton trained for 14 seasons in high school, including nine years at The Citadel, his alma mater. He also trained at CFL and the European Football League.
