Packers likely to restructure Aaron Rodgers contract

The Packers freed up more than $ 10 million of coverage space by launching Christian Kirksey and Rick Wagner several days ago. However, Green Bay is still about $ 13 million above the $ 180 million ceiling, so there is a lot of work to be done before the 2021 league year officially starts on March 17.

According to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers will almost certainly restructure the quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘contract in an effort to create additional boundary space. The 37-year-old signal caller owes a base salary of $ 14.7 million in 2021, along with a $ 6.8 million on-call bonus that will expire in March. Green Bay could convert part of that base salary into a signature bonus, a common move the club has already performed with a left tackle David Bakhtiari.

Of course, Rodgers said shortly after the Packers’ defeat in the NFC Championship Game in January that his future with the Packers was “uncertain”, which naturally led to many speculations. Some reports suggested that his comments were an effort to secure a new contract that represented a strong commitment from the franchise, whose selection of Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 project it clearly angered Rodgers. And another report indicated that the comments – which Rodgers later tried to minimize – were not contractually motivated and that the player and team were heading towards a bitter divorce.

Meanwhile, the Packers boss insisted that Rodgers is not going anywhere, and Demovsky says the club could certainly undertake a more comprehensive restructuring of Rodgers’ contract in addition to a simple conversion of base salary into bonuses. Green Bay selected Love after three consecutive years of Rodgers’ “down” (by his standards), but by 2020, Rodgers was nothing short of sensational. He set career records as a percentage of completion (70.7%), QBR (84.4) and TD approvals (48), so it makes sense for the team to be receptive to a new contract that gives your superstar additional security (financially or otherwise).

Demovsky also appoints OLB Preston Smith it’s from Dean Lowry as potential victims of the limit.
