Packers GM Brian Gutekunst attended Florida State Professional Day

Jim Nagy, the executive director of the Senior Bowl, confirmed on Monday that Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst was present for Florida’s professional day. Gutekunst could be exploring a wide variety of possibilities, including cornerback Asante Samuel Jr, edge rusher Josh Khandoh, receiver Tamorrion Terry, striker Marvin Wilson, edge rusher Janarius Robinson and safety Hamsah Nasirildeen.

Gutekunst was able to see firsthand what this year’s Seminoles class brings to the table, as far as their official measures and how they move on the pitch.

One player that stood out was wide receiver Tamorrion Terry. It fits the mold almost perfectly for the type of receiver that Green Bay likes to target in the project in terms of size and speed. Terry measured 6-2 and 207 and ran a 4.44 in the 40 yard race. It also has an impressive arm length of 33.375 inches.

There were other notable numbers coming out of Florida’s professional day. Wilson’s wingspan measured 81.125 inches. For an edge rusher, Robinson had an impressive 86.25-inch wingspan and 25 bench press reps. Meanwhile, the Khandoh exhibited his athleticism by running a 4.70 forty and recording a jump in width of 10 feet and 5 inches.

Of course, Gutekunst probably kept an eye on Samuel. There is a lot of buzz surrounding the son of former Pro Bowl corner Asante Samuel and how he would pair up with Packers’ corner, Jaire Alexander.

Samuel has a slim figure, weighing about 5 to 10 and weighing just 180 pounds. He ran a 4.45 in the forties, but struggled with the three-cone drill. Samuel ran only 6.95, which is considered slightly below average for an NFL corner. Alexander’s three-cone time was a little faster at 6.71, while Kevin King’s was 6.56.

However, Samuel and Alexander have similar constructions and other athletic tests that compare favorably. They have the same 35-inch vertical heel and a wide heel that differs by just a few inches.

During his media availability, Samuel was asked about his size and how to play inside or outside the NFL. In his response, he referred to Alexander’s size and tenacity as an external chant.

“I played away from home my whole life. I feel like a dominant corner outside. I am the same size as Jaire Alexander. Size does not matter. It’s about the heart and the canine mentality in the field, ”he said.

Samuel can be the target of Green Bay with his 29th choice, or they can hope he falls for them in the second round. Most draft categories have Samuel as the final participant in the first round or the beginning of the second round.

However, Samuel received a RAS score of 6.42 by Kent Lee Platte, which is usually lower than what the Packers are looking for. If Green Bay doesn’t love Samuel Jr’s film, they could turn their attention to another area with a better athletic profile.

Gutekunst is clearly doing his due diligence on this year’s prospect harvest after a shortened 2020 season. Gutekunst also attended Clemson’s professional day on March 11 and is likely to attend many more until the April draft.
