Packers firing special team coordinator Shawn Mennenga

The Green Bay Packers will have a new leader of their special teams in 2021.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Matt LaFleur and the Packers are splitting up with special team coordinator Shawn Mennenga.

LaFleur initially hired Mennenga when building his first technical team with the Packers in 2019. In the past two seasons, the Packers have ranked 26th and 29th in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual special team ranking.

This season, the Packers’ special teams have been responsible for several mistakes and big moves, including two punt return touchdowns, a blocked punt and a poorly made onside kickoff recovery. They also had one of the NFL’s worst return units in punts and kicks.

Mennenga replaced Ron Zook, who was the final coordinator of Mike McCarthy’s special teams. The Packers qualified 32 in special teams before Mennenga’s arrival.
