PA COVID: Mass vaccination facilities arriving in Montgomery counties, Delaware

DREXEL HILL, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – Plans are being made to protect residents of Delaware and Montgomery counties against COVID-19.

Large vaccination sites will help administer doses to as many people as possible.

But many residents say they still have many questions about the launch.

We found a group outside Wawa in Upper Darby who said they were looking for more information.

“It is somewhat vague as to how much is available and when exactly it will be most widely spread,” said Patrice Dorfman of Drexel Hill.
Rich Gallagher of Drexel Hill said, “They have to explain more about what it is and what it is going to do.”

Dr. Monica Taylor, vice president of the Delaware County Council, told Action News what the county’s position is when it comes to administering the vaccine.

“We have about 4,500 vaccinations so far, in the first round,” said Taylor.

Dr. Taylor also said that they are planning to open three mass vaccination sites, including one in Yeadon.

“It will be at our wellness center and therefore it is a defined location and then we are looking at two locations in the middle of the county and one location on the west side,” said Taylor.

However, she says that the priority now is health professionals. As for everyone else, she said, “It will be a fluid situation and we will learn as we go and make adjustments as it happens.”
Action News found that there will also be a mass vaccination site at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell. The inauguration of the site is scheduled for Wednesday.

“Our goal is to reach 2,000 a day, but we are unlikely to reach that by the end of January. So our immediate goal is 1,000 a day, but that depends on how much vaccine we will receive,” said Acting Health Administrator. Janet Panning.

People will have to register on the Montgomery County COVID-19 website, but, as in Delaware County, Montgomery County is focusing on vaccinating frontline health workers.

“In the past two weeks, we received the vaccine on Wednesday mornings and received 2,000 doses at a time,” said Panning.

Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said on Monday that 135,044 Pennsylvania residents have been vaccinated so far. She says it will be several months before the general population can expect to receive the vaccine. It provides for a compromise style system to avoid long lines when the expanded rollout starts.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed 3,226 additional positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday, in addition to 4,579 new cases reported on Sunday, January 3, for a two-day total of 7,805 additional positive cases of COVID-19. This brings the total across the state to 665,097.

There are 5,529 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19, almost double the peak in the spring. Of that number, 1,149 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19.
