Pa. Confirms that hospitalizations for COVID-19 fall as pressure for vaccination increases | Pennsylvania News

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Health Department confirmed, starting at 12 noon on February 13, 4,088 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 892,344.

There are currently 2,548 people hospitalized with COVID-19, according to authorities.

Of that number, 496 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19.

However, coronavirus hospitalizations in Pennsylvania have dropped by more than half since their peak in December.

Authorities say there are currently 2,600 people hospitalized with the virus.

Hospitalizations peaked at more than 6,000 in late December.

Despite the big drop, hospitalizations are still high. The number of coronavirus patients currently being treated in hospitals is at the same level as the first pandemic peak last spring.

The percentage positivity across the state for the week from February 5 to February 11 was 8.0%.

More accurate daily data is available on the website, with archived data also available.

According to authorities, as of 11:59 pm on Friday, February 12, there were 113 new deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death record, reported for a total of 23,072 deaths attributed to COVID-19. County-specific information and a state map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

Distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine

Pennsylvania hospitals began receiving shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the week of December 14 and the Modern COVID-19 vaccine in the week of December 21.

The authorities note that this includes administering the vaccine through CVS as part of the Federal Pharmacy Partnership as well.

Pennsylvania vaccination numbers do not include Philadelphia, which is its own jurisdiction, or federal facilities, which work directly with the federal government.

This week, a total of 318,450 doses will be allocated until February 13:

  • 175,175 first doses will have been allocated this week.
  • 143,275 second doses will have been allocated this week.

To date, of the 2,439,550 doses allocated until February 13, 1,588,761 doses have been administered in total until February 12:

  • First doses, 85 percent (1,210,194 administered out of 1,426,600 allocated)
  • Second doses, 37 percent (378,567 administered out of 1,012,950 allocated)

According to the authorities, there are 103,737 individuals with a positive viral antigen test and are considered probable cases and 637 individuals with a positive serology test and COVID-19 symptoms or high risk exposure.

There are 3,757,904 individuals with a negative test so far.

In licensed nursing homes and personal care, there are 65,387 resident cases of COVID-19 and 12,680 cases among employees, for a total of 78,067 in 1,555 different units in all 67 municipalities.

Of the total deaths reported to PA-NEDSS, 12,000 occurred in nursing residents or personal care facilities.

The authorities note that the number of deaths reported to the NEDSS is not exactly the same as the deaths related to COVID-19 reported by the death registry.

The number of deaths among residents and employees of nursing homes and personal care is taken from the death data of PA-NEDSS, since this information is not available in the data of the death record.

Approximately 24,157 of the total cases occur among health professionals.

On Friday, the Wolf Administration issued a request for a COVID-19 vaccine to help streamline the process.

According to the authorities, although the supply of vaccines from the federal government remains limited, the Department of Health is working to ensure that the vaccine is delivered in an ethical, equitable and efficient manner.
