GRAFTON, Wisconsin – An Ozaukee County clinic that discarded more than 500 doses of the Modern vaccine last week found that the vials were purposely removed from a pharmacy refrigerator.

According to a press release, 57 vials of the vaccine were removed at the Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. Employees originally believed that the incident was due to “human error”, but the employee who withdrew the doses told employees that they intentionally removed them from the refrigerator.

Each vial contained 10 doses of the vaccine, and more than 500 doses were discarded as a result. The vaccine cannot be refrozen after defrosting, but doctors were able to administer part of the vaccine within 12 hours after refrigeration.

The health system said the authorities “continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic” and that employees are “more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in more than 500 people being delayed in receiving the vaccine”.

Aurora said the decision violates the provider’s values and that the person is no longer employed by the health care system. Authorities were also contacted for further investigations.
