Netflix’s exclusive dramas “The Crown” and “Ozark” lead the nominations for the 26th Annual Critics’ Choice Award.
“The Crown” and “Ozark” received six nominations, which the Critics Choice Association announced on Monday, including best drama. The strength of these programs and others has given Netflix a total of 26 nominations – the maximum for any medium. HBO was next, with 22 nominations.
The HBO score led with another nominee for best drama, “Lovecraft Country”, which won five nominations. Other programs with five include “Mrs. America ”(the most recognized limited series); as well as the beloved Emmy “Schitt’s Creek” (Pop TV) and “What We Do in the Shadows” by FX, both of which received more nods for a comedy.
In addition to best drama, “The Crown” also secured nominations for stars Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (who will compete in the drama actress category), Josh O’Connor (drama actor), Gillian Anderson (supporting drama actress) and Tobias Menzies (supporting actor drama).
Other nods to “Ozark” include drama actor for Jason Bateman, drama actress for Laura Linney, supporting actor for Tom Pelphrey and supporting actress for Julia Garner and Janet McTeer.
In addition to “The Crown” and “Ozark”, the eclectic drama category features “Better Call Saul” (AMC), “The Good Fight” (CBS All Access), “Lovecraft Country” (HBO), “The Mandalorian” ( Disney Plus), “Perry Mason” (HBO) and “This Is Us” (NBC).
As for comedy, in addition to “Schitt’s Creek” and “What We Do In the Shadows”, the category includes “Better Things” (FX), “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Mom” (CBS), “Pen15 ”(Hulu),“ Ramy ”(Hulu) and“ Ted Lasso ”(Apple TV Plus).
Meanwhile, this year’s nominations include a new category, for abbreviation (dominated by debutant Quibi in his first – and only – season), while nominees were not announced for an animated series category. In another change, the number of nominees for acting has been reduced this year: from eight to six in actor and drama actress, and from seven to six in most other acting categories.
In addition to Quibi, other streaming debutants include HBO Max, with two nominations (both for “The Flight Attendant”). As for Netflix’s leadership, it was reinforced by the special comedy category – in which it got all six nominations to sweep the category.
Most of last year’s winners were ineligible due to a hiatus, production delays related to COVID or the end of the series – programs like “Fleabag”, “Watchmen” and “Succession”. This can open the door to more new faces.
Taye Diggs returns for the third consecutive time as host of the Critics Choice Awards, which will air on Sunday, March 7 at 7:00 pm (Eastern Time) on The CW. (The nominees for the film will be announced on February 7). The 26th annual Critics’ Choice Awards show will be produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment.
