Ovi’s big day was wasted: Flyers beat Caps 7-4

Washington Capitals hosted the Philadelphia Flyers for a fun – if not very frustrating – Sunday matinee from the Super Bowl.

Alex Ovechkin entered the scoreboard early and refused to leave it. He scored in power play and then prepared Tom Wilson for a beautiful goal. Scott Laughton took the day off for the Flyers, scoring two goals in the second period.

Ovechkin responded with his second goal of the game, a blow from the blue line. But then the Flyers tied (Robert Hagg) and then took the lead (James van Riemdsyk), kicking Vitek Vanecek out of the net for the first time. Before the second period was over, Alex Ovechkin found Nicklas Backstrom in the painting to tie him up again.

And then, in the first round of the third period, Sean Couturier restored the lead to Philly. So Scott Laughton did the hat trick, and then Sean Couturier made a touchdown on an empty netter.

Caps lose.

  • Nick Jensen had a monster in the first period, saving two almost certain goals with a great play in his own final. He is usually an underrated player, but we certainly heard his name very early on this one.
  • And then we hear Alex Ovechkin‘He sat on. With a monstrous individual performance, Ovechkin looked a decade younger. He scored two goals and created two more, appearing in a great game. Ian will have more about it, but I want to draw your attention to this move, where Ovi carried the puck into the zone, danced around Philippe Myers and then prepared Tom Wilson for a goal. Ovi used to make this move in every game, but it was in 2009.
  • On the other hand, Vitek Vanecek it had a genuine stink, the first of the year. You can use your own calculation to decide how many of those goals were scored correctly, but in the end he gave up four goals in 14 shots – a percentage of 0.710 saves. Craig Anderson made his first appearance in the game for the Caps with relief. I have nothing to say about him, except that I think he’s a great guy.
  • As today’s game was a fun blockbuster, it is mainly because the Flyers managed to score many goals in relatively few chances. The Caps had more of the puck and did more with it, but in the end it’s a game of goals.
  • With Caps reduced by 5-4 in the third period, human rumors Zdeno Chara was arrested by a minor double for sticking high (for him: sticking at the nipple level), forcing the large Caps PK unit to be great for four minutes. They went.
  • I watched this whole game and I still don’t know who Philippe Maillet is. The 28-year-old AHLer made his NHL debut today.

Not Joe B. Here’s a hug instead:

The Caps lost three consecutive regulatory games. They have some mondo moves outside their top row, but they just don’t have a full team right now, either in the squad or in that squad’s performance. It was not possible to buy a save.

What a huge bore.
