Otter.ai’s new Chrome extension can transcribe Google Meet calls in real time

You can now use the automated transcription service Otter.ai to transcribe and provide captions for Google Meet calls with the help of a new Chrome extension. Meetings will be transcribed in real time, and the transcripts will be saved directly to your Otter account so that you can access and share them later.

Otter.ai says the extension works with all of his plans, which means that even free users will be able to take advantage of the tool.

To set it up, first download the Otter.ai Chrome extension here. After installing it, go to meet.google.com and click on the Otter extension. (You may need to click on the puzzle piece icon to open the extensions menu and find it.) You may then be asked to log in to use the extension, even though I was already logged in when I tested it. From there, log in to your meeting, tap the “record” button for the Otter extension and you will see the transcript begin to be completed in real time.

You can also activate closed captions by clicking on the “cc” button surrounded by a box in the Otter window. But Google Meet already offers a closed captioning feature, which you can activate by clicking on a similar icon in the menu at the bottom of a Meet window, so choosing which one to use will be a matter of personal preference.

Otter.ai doesn’t just make live transcripts of Google Meet calls; the service also integrates directly with Zoom. But to use Otter’s integrated live transcripts on Zoom, you need to have a paid Otter and Zoom plan, unlike Google Meet.
