This includes documentary and international resources, as well as original music, score and visual effects.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opened its lists for the 2021 Oscar in nine categories, including documentaries and international films.
Also launched were the lists of original songs, original music, makeup and hairstyle, visual effects and documentary, live action and animation short.
An unprecedented number of 238 documentaries and 93 international resources vied for only 15 places on each of their respective lists. This year, both lists include Collective and Chile Agent Mole. The document list also includes voter suppression documents All In: The struggle for democracy, while Bryan Fogel’s The dissident, on the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, was among the titles that did not advance.
The list of finalists on the original soundtrack includes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who were recognized for their work on the 1940 biographical film by longtime collaborator David Fincher Mank and Pixar animation Soul, for which they created the ethereal music of “Grande Antes”. (The Nine Inch Nails multihyphenates had already won an Oscar for Fincher’s score The Social Network.) Alma ‘The song was additionally composed by Jon Baptiste.
Likewise, Oscar winner John Legend was quoted twice in the race for the original song for the document’s “Never Break” Giving Voice and “Make it work” Jingle Jangle: a Christmas journey. That list also includes “Io Si (visa)” from Life ahead, made up of 11 Oscar nominees, Diane Warren.
Due to the pandemic, which caused many pillars to move from 2020 to 2021, this will be the first year since 2009 that the short list of special effects does not contain at least one Marvel film. The list includes The Midnight Sky and Principle, and all 10 titles will be presented at the VFX subsidiaries’ annual bake-off, which this year will be held in virtual format in March. 6. The make-up and hairdressing industry will make a virtual bake-off featuring its 10 pre-selected films on the same date.
Each of these lists will produce nominees for the category, which will be announced on March 15. The 93rd Oscar will be presented on April 25, instead of its typical window in February, due to the pandemic. A format has not yet been announced.
