Oscar Frayer: The male basketball player dies days after playing in the NCAA tournament

Frayer, 23, his older sister Andrea Moore and a friend died in the accident, said the Antelopes athletics department. The third person has not yet been identified by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office, according to the athletics department.

The Grand Canyon, ranked 15th in the NCAA tournament, lost to runner-up Iowa in the 64th round on Saturday in Indianapolis, Indiana. Frayer scored eight points in his final game. This was the first male appearance at the Grand Canyon NCAA tournament.

A veteran redshirt from Oakland, California, Frayer was the son of Oscar Frayer and Bionca Sparrow. The oldest Oscar Frayer died in a car accident when the young Oscar was 7, according to a story on the athletics department website.

Frayer graduated from Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California. After setting a career record of 30 starts as a junior, Frayer was academically ineligible in the 2019-2020 season. But he had the opportunity to return to Lopes to play one last season, starting 24 games, and majoring in communication. He was supposed to start walking next month.

“We love O,” said Grand Canyon head coach Bryce Drew. “He was the heart of our team with his vibrant and energetic personality. I cannot express in words the pain and sadness that we all feel, but we know that he is in heaven and it gives us great joy to know that we will be together again.”

Frayer averaged 6.6 points per game this season and 8 points per game in his college career.

“On the court, Oscar was known as the ‘High Flyer’ and will be remembered for his high dunks, tenacious defense and blocked shots to change the game,” the university said in a statement. “Off the court, he will be remembered for his infectious smile, energetic spirit and caring soul that made him one of the most beloved students on campus.”
