Oregon sheriff’s assistants recovered the body of a 50-year-old woman just over a week after her car was hit by a landslide, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department confirmed on Saturday.
Jennifer Moore of Warrendale was driving near Dodson, Oregon, east of Portland along the Columbia River and on the border with Washington, around 1:00 am on January 13, when her SUV was taken by the landslide. , the department said in a press release.
Investigators estimated that her vehicle was buried under about 15 feet of mud, stone and logs and a contractor hired by the sheriff’s department had to use a high-powered metal detector to find its exact location.
To get to the vehicle, the teams had to use heavy machines, such as front loaders and dump trucks.
“It is not the result everyone expected,” said the sergeant from the river patrol unit. Steve Dangler said in a statement, “but at least at this point, it closes the family and allows them to begin the grieving process.”
Moore’s husband told reporters he was on the phone with her at the time of the landslide, Oregon’s FOX 12 reported.
He said he was driving in front of her in a separate car after they had dinner scheduled and heard her scream followed by crashing noises.

An evacuation notice came into effect in the area that morning due to the risk of flooding after a stormy night, according to FOX 12. Residents were allowed to return home from 17 January.
