Oregon reports 10 more deaths from COVID-19, 1 in Deschutes; toll approaches 2,000

Woman, 71, with underlying diseases died on January 28 at her home

PORTLAND, Oregon. (KTVZ) – There are 10 new COVID-19-related deaths in Oregon, including one in Deschutes County, increasing the state’s death toll to 1,991, the Oregon Health Authority said on Wednesday.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 649 new confirmed and presumed cases of COVID-19 at 12:01 pm on Wednesday, bringing the state total to 144,605.

Vaccinations in Oregon

OHA reported on Wednesday that 17,720 new doses of COVID-19 vaccinations have been added to the state’s immunization registry. Of that total, 12,173 doses were administered on Tuesday and 5,547 were administered in the previous days, but entered the vaccine register on Tuesday.

Cumulative daily totals can take several days to complete because providers have 72 hours to report administered doses and technical challenges have caused many providers to delay reporting. OHA has provided technical support to vaccination sites to improve the opportunity for their data entry into the state’s ALERT Immunization Information System (IIS).

Oregon has administered a cumulative total of 471,966 first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines. To date, 706,575 doses of the vaccine have been delivered to locations in Oregon.

These data are preliminary and are subject to change. OHA panels provide regularly updated vaccination data, and the Oregon panel was updated on Wednesday.

The St. Charles Health System reported 22,481 COVID-19 vaccinations given on Wednesday.

COVID-19 Hospitalizations

The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across Oregon is 266, four more than on Tuesday. There are 63 patients with COVID-19 in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, that is, two more than Tuesday.

The total number of patients in hospital beds can fluctuate between reporting times. The figures do not reflect hospitalizations per day, nor the length of stay. Personnel limitations are not captured in this data and can further limit the capacity of beds.

St. Charles Bend reported 15 patients with COVID-19 by 4 am on Wednesday, four of whom were in the ICU, three on ventilators.

More information about the hospital’s capacity can be found here.

COVID-19 variant tracking

Starting on Wednesday, OHA will report on the number of people in Oregon with confirmed variant strains of the virus that causes COVID-19 on the Oregon COVID-19 update panel. New cases of variants will be reported through this panel from Monday to Friday.

New variants of SARS-CoV-2 were documented in the United States and around the world during this pandemic, and information about the characteristics of these variants is rapidly emerging.

Viruses constantly change through mutations, and new variants of a virus must occur over time. Most variants do not change the behavior of the virus and many disappear.

OHA continues to monitor the variants being identified and will provide updates.
