Orderly fire evacuations at Cherry Creek State Park

AURORA, Colorado – A forest fire in a swampy area at Cherry Creek State Park forced evacuations in the area.

Evacuations are in effect for residents in the immediate west of Parker Road and for people within Cherry Creek State Park.

This is the second largest forest fire team fighting amid strong gusts in the metropolitan area. A 100-acre campfire near Bear Creek Lake Park and Fox Hollow Golf Course near Morrison prompted evacuations on Sunday afternoon. Most of the fire was extinguished in the late afternoon.

South Metro firefighters are at the Cherry Creek fire site and are working to gain control of the fire before the length of the flames grows with continuous gusts of wind. No structure is threatened at this time.

Firefighters said the wind was fueling the northwest side of the fire, making suppression difficult and dangerous with embers entering trees and causing branches to fall.
