Orange County’s second COVID-19 vaccination super site opens at Soka University in Aliso Viejo

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (KABC) – Orange County’s second super vaccination site COVID-19 opened on Saturday, drawing hundreds of residents to receive their vaccines, including many vulnerable elderly people.

About 2,000 people were inoculated at the site located at Soka University in Aliso Viejo. It opened its doors less than two weeks after the county’s first major website opened at Disneyland.

The Disneyland website is outdoors, but Soka University vaccines will be administered in the campus gym. Residents can use the county’s Othena app or website to make an appointment at any of the locations.

Supervisor Lisa Bartlett said that an advantage of the Soka University website is its convenience for older people in the area, such as residents of the Laguna Woods Village retirement community. County officials are providing vaccines to seniors aged 65 and over because they are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19.

The county plans to open more sites as soon as more vaccines are available.

Despite the opening of the new site, vaccine supply remains a major obstacle for many southern California counties. The Orange County Health Agency says it is continually requesting more doses from the state.

Those who got an appointment on the Aliso Viejo website said they are grateful for the reopening, including a woman who was able to book appointments for her parents.

“I am very relieved by everything that is happening around the world and seeing all people in hospitals without their families. I was very concerned about my family, but I am very relieved, ”said Fatima Mougammadou.

She added that the process on the new website was very organized.

Even with the vaccine shortage, county officials say they believe they are on track to vaccinate everyone in Orange County by the fourth of July.
