ORLANDO, Fla. – The first vaccination day for seniors in Central Florida began Tuesday morning at the Orange County Convention Center.

“It’s relaxing to know it’s finally here,” said Bill Young, 75.

Young and his wife, Irene, said they couldn’t be more relieved after Bill received the first dose of the Modern vaccine. Irene said she has an appointment for Thursday.

“They checked a lot to make sure the bar code was correct and that their name and age were correct,” said Young.

Cars started to circulate in the North Hall at the convention center just before 8 am

Kent Donahue, a spokesman for Florida’s Orange County Department of Health, said the agency had 1,500 appointments scheduled for the day, and he expects it to be just as busy on Wednesday.

He said consultations are necessary and only people aged 65 and over are eligible. The vaccine website is also open to residents outside Orange County, according to the county website.

“As you know, this is Moderna (vaccine), so there is a time interval for the first dose and the second dose. It is a 28-day cycle. On that 29th day, they should automatically get the second appointment through the system itself ”, explained Donahue.

Donahue said the venue will be open for half a day on Thursday, which is New Year’s Eve, and will be closed on Friday, New Year’s Day.
