Oral Roberts takes Florida down to advance to NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Sweet 16

Oral Roberts University defeated Florida in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketbal Tournament on Sunday night, 81-78, and became the first number 15 to reach Sweet 16 since 2013.

Kevin Obanor’s 28 points and Max Abmas’s 26 points helped the Golden Eagles to overcome the No. 7 Gators. Obanor added 11 rebounds and four rebounds, while Abmas had seven assists to his credit.

DeShang Weaver made a three-point basket to give the Golden Eagles a two-point advantage with 2:10 to play in the game. Obanor added a free throw in the final stretch.

Tre Mann lost the three-point draw and Scottie Lewis’s offensive rebound and the attempted draw also failed.

Prior to Friday’s frustrating victory, Oral Roberts had not won a tournament game since 1974. After that victory, the team had participated in four other NCAA tournaments, but had lost in the first round. Oral Roberts’ victory over Ohio changed things.

Oral Roberts’ biggest advantage in the game was three points. The Golden Eagles had to go back down from 12 to win the game. Florida also surpassed Oral Roberts, 37-24.

Four Gators players were in double digits in the game.

Mann had 19 points, Noah Locke had 17, Colin Castleton had 14 and Tyree Appleby also had 14. Florida only advanced three times on his bench in victory.

Oral Roberts will face No. 3 Arkansas next week.
