Every year, the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS) announces vehicles that earn their Superior security choice, or Superior security choice + awards. The good news is that the prize pool has increased to 2021, with 90 vehicles being recognized versus 64 last year. The bad news is that only a pickup truck gets on the list, but it’s still better than Mitsubishi, which was not on the list with none of your models.
To be fair, Mitsubishi only sells four models in the United States. The Mirage subcompact is a fuel consumption champion, with the Outlander SUV serving as the brand’s backbone. Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross populate Mitsubishi’s lineup, but IIHS offered no indication as to whether these vehicles were even close to receiving an award. If there’s any good news here, it’s that Mitsubishi recently debuted a brand new Outlander that borrows a lot from the Nissan Rogue. The Rogue received a Superior security choice + award for 2021, so maybe that will trickle out to the Outlander next year.

Pickup trucks dominate new vehicle sales in the U.S. market, but only the Ram 1500 Crew Cab won a prize. Received a Superior security choice, but it is the only vehicle in the entire Portfolio of Stellantis brands to qualify. Likewise, only two umbrella vehicles from General Motors were awarded. The Cadillac XT6 received a Superior security choice + and the Chevrolet Equinox received a Superior security choice. Hyundai Motor Group led the way with 17 awards overall, while Volvo took first place in the highest honors with nine Superior security choice + awards.
IIHS awards are based on the performance of vehicles in various categories.
