Ongoing ‘Great Gatsby’ series by Michael Hirst – Deadline

A television adaptation of The big Gatsby is in progress. A + E Studios and ITV Studios America are teaming up with writer Michael Hirst (Vikings, The Tudors) to develop a series of dramatic events from a single season based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel. A + E Studios and ITV Studios America will co-produce in association with Groundswell Productions.

Hirst will write the pilot script and serve as executive producer with Michael London of Groundswell Productions (Laterally, milk).

The series of events is described as a retelling of Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, which investigates the New York African American community of the time and the vibrant musical subculture that developed in the 1920s. Farah Jasmine Griffin, William B. Ransford, professor of English and comparative literature and African American studies at Columbia University, he serves as a consultant producer on the project. The series will explore the hidden lives of its characters through the modern lens of a fragmented American dream, while capturing the majesty of Fitzgerald’s timeless vision.

The project has the support and approval of Blake Hazard, great-granddaughter of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and curator of the estate of Fitzgerald, who also serves as a production consultant.
