OnePlus Watch will not officially run Google’s Wear OS

In the past few months, there has been a lot of back and forth about whether or not OnePlus Watch is running Google’s Wear OS platform. Now, CEO Pete Lau has officially confirmed that the OnePlus Watch will have its own operating system.

In a forum post today, Lau dropped a teaser of the OnePlus Watch, which confirms what we already knew, that the brand’s first smartwatch will arrive on March 23 along with the OnePlus 9 series. In the post, he explains that a smartwatch was the most requested device in the company’s community, and OnePlus sees the device as “more than just instruments that indicate time and heartbeat”.

Although OnePlus started with a focus on flagship smartphones, we have also been looking for other devices that our users use most often in conjunction with their smartphones for an interconnected experience. Naturally, we turn our attention to smartwatches, as it aligns with our mission to create a free experience. We see smartwatches as more than just instruments that indicate time and heartbeat, but as powerful devices capable of taking our personal digital experience to new heights. And we must not forget that a smartwatch is the device most requested by you, the OnePlus Community.

Lau also explains that the OnePlus Watch has an “impressive and simple design”, as well as connectivity with smartphones and OnePlus TVs. A report today mentioned that the watch could be used as a remote control for Android-based TVs. Apparently, all of this will have an “affordable” price as well.

Turning on the OnePlus Watch, however, will not be Wear OS, or even Android. Instead, OnePlus is using an “RTOS” or “real-time operating system”. It is a lightweight platform that should provide excellent battery life, but it will likely lack a lot of third-party apps and watchfaces, which is an area where Wear OS excels. Many probably think this is a good thing, but we will have to see the final product to make a real judgment.

We opted for a smart wear operating system based on RTOS because we believe it provides a smooth and reliable experience, while offering great battery life, covering some of the biggest concerns we hear from people looking to buy a smartwatch.
