OnePlus Watch gets the launch confirmation we needed

THE OnePlus Watch will appear on March 23 alongside the OnePlus 9 series, the company confirmed today. In a small teaser on Twitter and a follow-up post on its forums, OnePlus teased the wearable with a set of images and a bit of wordplay referring to “watch” and “watch” and “time” throughout its subscription. They were not subtle, but that was the point.

We all know that the OnePlus Watch has been under construction for some time and was confirmed to be launched earlier this year by OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau. We think it can come in two sizes and we hope it ends up running Wear OS, but we have doubts.

The Wear OS part of that story is really a big question mark. OnePlus has publicly said that it is working with Google to improve Wear OS, but has never officially linked this next watch to Wear OS and instead talked mainly about them as separate topics. It certainly worried me that OnePlus would instead be releasing a fitness-focused watch that is more of an update to its newly launched fitness bracelet than a standalone Wear OS device. In fact, we’ve already seen tips that the watch shares the OnePlus Health app with the OnePlus Band.

OnePlus at least told us that OnePlus Watch will help us to keep us “healthy, on time and even taking care of you while you sleep”. To translate there, it means that it will be a health tracker, keep time and have a sleep tracker. Wear OS does not have sleep tracking yet, so unless OnePlus has a plan to build it there, I will continue to be inclined so that this is just an updated version of the OnePlus Band without the Google operating system behind it.

In the images below, we give some design tips with what appears to be a rubber sports band and a metal frame with many curves. This has to be a round clock, right?

Only a few days to go!
