The OnePlus 9 is on the horizon, with the series set to make its debut later this month. If the numerous leaks are any reference, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro should offer cameras much better than their predecessors. But the flagship numbered series is not the only line that OnePlus has to worry about today; the introduction of Nord last year allowed the Chinese manufacturer to make decent inroads into the midsize segment.

OnePlus Nord 2 is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1200

The OnePlus Nord remains one of the best-selling intermediary phones in markets such as India, and we now have details about its 2021 successor. Based on information from reliable sources, I can reveal that the next Nord will be called Nord 2 and will be powered by Dimensity 1200 chipset from MediaTek.

That’s a big change for the OnePlus, which has exclusively used Qualcomm chipsets in all of its phones to date. In fact, Nord was the first OnePlus phone to feature a chipset outside the main Snapdragon 800 series, but over the past year the company has taken advantage of the Snapdragon 600 and 400 series designs for the Nord N10 5G and N100.

This is a big change for OnePlus and a big win for MediaTek.

The Dimensity 1200 was unveiled earlier this year and the platform is built on a 6 nm node. It has a main Cortex A78 core that runs up to 3.0 GHz, three additional A78 cores up to 2.6 GHz and four Cortex A55 cores that can go up to 2.0 GHz for energy efficiency tasks. It also has a nine-core Mali-G77 GPU and comes with global 5G connectivity along with dual 5G dual SIM standby – a feature Qualcomm will not yet adopt in 2021.

This is a major victory for MediaTek, which has struggled to meet Qualcomm’s offerings in the past, especially in the medium and high standard categories. However, that changed after the introduction of the Dimensity series, with MediaTek able to guarantee design wins from OPPO, Xiaomi, Vivo, LG and now OnePlus.

One of Nord’s top selling points last year was its affordable price, with the phone selling for only $$ 24,999 ($ 340) in India – making it one of the best cheap Android phones. The Dimensity 1200 is a considerable hardware update for the Snapdragon 765G, so it will be interesting to see where the OnePlus will position the Nord 2 in relation to the OnePlus 9 series. I should have more details on the rest of the hardware in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more information about Nord 2.
