  • OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei unveiled his new startup, called Nothing.
  • The company will launch smart devices in the first half of the year.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei left the smartphone maker last year, after confirming that he was working on a new venture. Now, Pei has confirmed that the new company is called Nothing.

“Nothing’s mission is to remove barriers between people and technology to create a continuous digital future,” says an excerpt from a company press release. So, what will the company really offer?

Well, the company noted at launch that its first “smart devices” would be launched in the first half of the year.

It didn’t reveal anything more specific, but Pei said earlier Wired that the company is related to audio and that several products are coming in 2021. The executive added at the time that the new company was more than just headphones.

Pei said The Verge that Nothing would offer products in several categories and aims to build an ecosystem of products.

“The definitive vision of having everything connected in a continuous way, which can only happen when you have several categories of products connected,” said the co-founder of OnePlus. He also added that the company plans to earn most of its money on hardware instead of software subscriptions, with earlier speculation pointing to a music service.

In what appears to be an attempt to reach the former company OnePlus, Pei also suggested that Nothing will not “re-label someone else’s products”.

It is also important to note that the European head of Nothing is David Sanmartin, who was recently director of European e-commerce at OnePlus, according to his LinkedIn profile.
