  • The OnePlus 9 Pro will have an adaptive display that drops to just 1 Hz, the first among phones.
  • This promises fast 120 Hz visuals without greatly affecting battery life.
  • It also offers an extremely fast 360Hz touch response.

The OnePlus is still revealing details of the 9 series before its debut on March 23, but this is one that you may be particularly interested in if you are a fan of fast screens. The company revealed that the OnePlus 9 Pro will be centered around the screen with a unique adaptive refresh rate.

The “Fluid Display 2.0” will use an OLED LTPO (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) display manufactured by Samsung that drops from 120 Hz quickly to just 1 Hz when looking at static content – the first time on a phone, says OnePlus. Along with adjustments, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s screen reportedly uses about half as much energy as before. This can be useful when you are browsing photos, reading text or looking at static material.

LTPO monitors are nothing new in the phone world. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra used one, for example. However, they don’t go as low as 1 Hz in practice – AnandTech noted that the note would not fall below 48Hz. In theory, you will consume more battery power than with a comparable 120 Hz display.

The OnePlus 9 Pro screen can also be ideal for gaming. It has a 360Hz touch response, dubbed Hyper Touch, which promises to cut up to 30ms of latency in games. Although this is not the fastest response on the planet (Xiaomi’s Mi 11 reaches 480 Hz), it is still rare and can make all the difference in action games. However, you will need special support. Only Call of Duty Mobile, League of Legends, PUBG, and Fight Stars will work with Hyper Touch first, with other titles coming sometime in the future.

It is unclear how much of this screen technology will translate into the regular OnePlus 9, although rumors have suggested that it may have a more conventional 120 Hz panel.

There is no doubt that the OnePlus is in hype mode here – it wants to convince you that the 9 Pro has one of the best monitors on the market, and that you won’t be able to get anywhere else (at least for now). Whether that statement is justified or not, it is clear that the OnePlus at least wants a truly competitive display that can keep it away from the Galaxy S21 and other top-notch flagships.
