OnePlus has an event scheduled for March 23, where it is set to reveal the OnePlus 9 series and its first smartwatch. Despite this, the company continues to share information about its upcoming devices, revealing today that the Pro model will include an adaptive refresh rate that can range from 1-120Hz.
The company said on its forums that the OnePlus 9 Pro will feature what it calls the Fluid Display 2.0, which will feature QHD + resolution, 10-bit color depth with a billion colors, HDR10 + certification and automatic color temperature adjustment. It will also be integrated with LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) backplane technology.

“A major breakthrough in display technology, LTPO dynamically adapts the refresh rate from 120 Hz to 1 Hz – lower than any other in the industry – based on its content,” said OnePlus. “The screen intelligently and effectively scales power requirements, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption with lower refresh rates.”
OnePlus said the 9 Pro can automatically switch to the most appropriate refresh rate according to the operation being performed on the screen, and can reach up to 1 Hz for things like viewing photos. The company claims that the OnePlus 9 Pro is the first phone to achieve an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz to 1 Hz. However, it is not the first phone with an OLED display to have an LTPO backplane for QHD + resolution and rate up to 120Hz variable update. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, Note 20 Ultra and S21 Ultra were the first cell phones to have OLED panels and varying refresh rates.

OnePlus said the 9 Pro also supports up to 6x faster sync speed between the screen and the processor for a better touch response. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau shared a tweet stating that the OnePlus 9 Pro screen is more responsive than that found on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The company claims that gaming latency has been reduced by 25-30 ms, which is a notable difference in fast twitch games, such as PUBG Mobile.
The launch event for the OnePlus 9 series will take place on March 23. At this point, it is more of a formality, considering that the OnePlus has already revealed important details, but we are still excited to see what else the company has up its sleeve.
