One person was killed and two others were injured in a shootout in New York City

A suspect and an innocent bystander were transported to local hospitals for treatment after the incident, NYPD assistant chief Kenneth Lehr said during a press briefing of the scene on Saturday night.

A third person, who was being chased by gunmen, was shot several times and died from his injuries, according to Lehr.

Three uniformed policemen heard shots at about 6:30 pm, Lehr said, and witnessed a man being shot and chased by two armed men who were coming towards him moments later.

The US saw a significant increase in crime in major cities in 2020. And it is not decreasing

The officers started shooting at the armed men, who tried to escape, but found two more uniformed policemen, according to Lehr. The suspects threw their weapons into a nearby van and were taken into custody without incident. Two weapons were recovered at the scene.

One of the armed men was shot during the incident with the police and taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition, Lehr told reporters.

An innocent bystander, whom Lehr said had no connection to the initial incident, was shot in the arm while walking down the street. Police officers helped the victim on the spot before she was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery.

It is not clear where the shots that killed the victim and injured the passerby, which Lehr said would be determined during the investigation, came from.

Authorities did not release the victim’s name until his family’s notification.

At the time of the investigation, the police said they had no reason for the shooting and the suspects’ charges in custody were still pending.

The incident is being investigated by the New York Force Investigations Division and the Detective Office.
