Olympic swimmer Klete Keller indicted on additional Capitol riot charges

Olympic swimmer Klete Keller has been indicted on additional charges about his alleged role in the United States Capitol riot.

The two-time gold medal winner, 38, was initially charged by federal authorities in January with three crimes: obstruction of law enforcement, violent entry and disorderly conduct and entry into a restricted building.

On Wednesday, a grand jury returned a new charge accusing him of seven crimes, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official process, entry into a restricted building, disorderly conduct in a restricted building and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.

Calls to the numbers listed for Keller were not returned on Friday and his lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

ONE video posted on Twitter by a Townhall Media reporter showed Keller inside the Capitol with a group of supporters of President Donald Trump on January 6. In the video, the crowd pushed the police who were trying to clean the Rotunda.

Keller was seen in the footage wearing his “USA” jacket. No video emerged of Keller participating in any of the violent acts on Capitol Hill.

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said in a January statement that she condemned the “actions of protesters on the United States Capitol”. USA Swimming issued a statement expressing similar feelings.

Keller, who was a teammate with Michael Phelps, did not speak publicly about his alleged participation in Capitol.

The athlete was last registered as a member of USA Swimming in 2008. After retiring from the sport, he worked as an independent contractor for Colorado Springs real estate agency Hoff & Leigh, but resigned last month.

More than 200 people were charged in the riot, which occurred after pro-Trump supporters invaded the Capitol in protest against the Electoral College vote stating Joe Biden’s presidential victory.
