People on Twitter never forget. And if they do, they’ll just dig up old tweets anyway.
Rumors have been circulating around Deshaun Watson since Thursday morning, when Pro Football Talk tweeted that Watson could seek an exchange away from the Houston Texans.
The 49ers was quickly considered by many to be a logical destination. Once Twitter detectives get to work, you’ll never know what they’ll find. It didn’t take long for some old Watson tweets to emerge, showing his love for 49ers during the Jim Harbaugh era.
On November 13, 2011, the 49ers overtook the New York Giants, 27-20, to move their record to 8-1 in Harbaugh’s first year as a coach. Count Watson among the faithful 49ers of the time.
Watson was also rooting for the red and gold guys during Super Bowl XLVIII, when the 49ers returned in the second half against the Ravens, but fell short in their quest for the sixth Lombardi trophy.
NFL players – those who aren’t called George Kittle, at least – seem to lose fan loyalty once they get to the league. But that at least gives us a glimpse of what Watson thought when he was a teenager, when he was just a league fan.

Watson is only 25 and one of the elite NFL quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo stands out as the team’s most likely internal option to start with the pivot in 2021. Still, generational talents like Watson don’t become available very often and 49ers should see if he would like to play for the team that used to root for .
